So often the security conversation is about technology praxis & opsec, but I think it's also important to be able to reach out to a community in person. This threat is for listing places, talking about them, and if you're in the area and it's cool with the members, even dropping in to say hello.

Not a hackerspace exactly, but definitely a community spot: Data & Society Research Institute

I'm a somewhat cautious of hackerspaces. They don't have a great history with being welcoming environments for newbies, and can be actively hostile to under-represented groups: women, people of color, &c.

I think you're right. I also think @geminiimatt is doing work in NYC to counteract this momentum.

Agreed. Unfortunately I think hackerspaces are also representative of inclusivity challenges within infosec more broadly. You see the same problems in security firms, hiring decisions, conferences, etc. But, starting to go a bit off-topic...
