Surveillance and journalism - a list of research publications

#1

I'm interested in gathering academic research and reports on the impact of surveillance on journalism. I'm more familiar with research in the U.S., but it would also be good to learn more about non-Western journalism and media activism. Can you help?

Hi Martin,

This is a very strong piece focusing on the effect of MS on minority voices

Stoycheff, E. (2016). Under Surveillance: Examining Facebook’s Spiral of Silence Effects in the Wake of NSA Internet Monitoring. Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly http://m.jmq.sagepub.com/content/early/2016/02/25/1077699016630255.full.pdf?ijkey=1jxrYu4cQPtA6&keytype=ref&siteid=spjmq

Hope it helps

The Tow Center + Media Lab submitted a public comment to Obama's Review Group on Intelligence and Communication Technologies (remember that?) in late 2013. It still covers a fair amount of ground, particularly in the discrepancies between DOJ and NSA treatment of journalist surveillance. Spoiler: DOJ is much more reasonable.

Interesting piece documenting the impact of surveillance on people using wikipedia to research sensitive issues:

"Chilling Effects: Online Surveillance and Wikipedia Use" - John Penney, Berkeley Technology Law Journal, 2016

This one isn't specifically on effects on journalism, it's more focused on Google users' search behavior in general, but still, I think it's interesting:
"Government Surveillance and Internet Search Behavior" - Alex Marthews, Catherine Tucker (2015) http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2412564
